Each year, the foundation selects about 70-100 academically outstanding, financially deserving U.S. undergraduate students as Bridging Scholars. The scholarship award ($2,500 for semester study or $4,500 for academic year study) must be used for tuition, travel, or daily cost-of-living expenses. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, be enrolled as an undergraduate in a U.S. college or university before and during the time they study abroad, and study in a semester (at least 3 months) or an academic-year program in Japan and earn credit that will transfer to their home campus in the U.S. Students majoring in any field may apply, and Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. However, students who have already started their study abroad in Japan are not eligible to apply.
